Why We Have a Fish Fry

As you know the Fish Fry has been a tradition here at Blessed Sacrament for many years.  People come from the entire community during the Lenten season to enjoy the food and camaraderie. The money that has been raised has enabled us to donate over $50,000 in scholarships for children and grandchildren of our Council and members of the parish to attend Catholic schools. While our Council has continued to sponsor and staff this event over the years it has been a disappointment that less than 20% of our members actually show up to do all the work.  We even have members of our own Council who attend other Fish Frys, leaving even fewer hands to carry on this noble event.

This year we are calling upon all members of our Council to live up to the Principles of the Order and the oath we each took during our Degree Exemplifications.  We pledged ourselves to Charity – this includes serving members of our community and helping others. We pledged ourselves to Unity – by working together as Brother Knights united to the wider Church and the world.  In the Third Degree we pledged ourselves to Fraternity – by working with each other on common projects as witnesses to Christ in a spirit of cooperation and respect.

We are calling upon each of you to ask yourself what you can do to support your Brothers this year. The Fish Fry is upon us, beginning Friday February 8 and concluding March 14.  Under the Chairmanship of Bob Gaudelli work schedules make it easier for you to volunteer.  You can work a 2 or 4 hour shift of days of your choice. We need you.  The fabulous 20% are wearing down, working long hours, and relying on family members to fill the gaps.  The time is now to step up and be counted. Ask yourself what you have done to demonstrate Charity, Unity and Fraternity for your Council.  Call Bob Gaudelli today and volunteer.  We almost lost this year’s Fish Fry for a lack of support. Don’t let it happen again.

In conclusion please thank those loyal workers from the past who have continued to dedicate their time already this year. Without them we wouldn’t be open February 8. At the risk of leaving out someone give a pat on the back to Art Coffey and his wife Joan, Mike Bracco, Tony and Joyce Bell, Lou and Margie Moon, Vince Melluse and his family – who drive all the way from Surprise and belong to a different Council – now that’s Fraternity in action, Joe Cotroneo, Frank Dolasinski, Fred Lucas, and the others who have committed once again to keep this alive.
