Stewardship Pillar of Hospitality & Service:  Parish's 1st Business Expo - May 2009

The Community of the Blessed Sacrament held its 1st Business Expo.  Sixty parishioner and bulletin advertiser exhibitor applications were received.  With the temperature being over 100 degrees in the parish’s courtyard, the Expo was held in the Social Hall.  Close to 400 raffle tickets were submitted for the over 20 door prizes donated by various exhibitors.  Most of the exhibitors received 5-6 new client referrals; there were a few who received as many as ten or more new client leads. A few exhibitors connected with candidates for job opportunities their businesses offered.  “The Parish Business Expo did bring connectedness to the parish.  This event brought parishioners together who didn’t know each other – it built a spirit of hospitality and welcome," Fr. Pat, Pastor  Click here for PDF.Article.

Parish’s Fun CenterTM Donation to Pediatric Patients at St. Joseph’s - March 2009

With the ultimate goal of helping patients and their families reduce the stress that accompanies a child's hospitalization, Blessed Sacrament donated $4,250 to Starlight Children’s Foundation Arizona www.starlight.org/arizona to provide a Fun CenterTM to pediatric patients at Children’s Rehabilitative Services at St. Joseph’s. The Fun CenterTM includes a state-of-the-art Wii video game system programmed with all the newest video games, as well as a DVD player and movies.  Blessed Sacrament returns a portion of parishioner giving to community outreach programs and non-profit organizations. The Fun CenterTM gift was selected from many causes recently submitted by parishioners to the Parish’s Ministry for Social Action. Starlight Children’s Foundation is a national, 501(c)3 organization founded in 1983 with the goal to empower and improve the quality of life for seriously ill children. For 25 years the organization has dedicated itself to helping ill children and their families cope with their pain, fear and isolation through entertainment, education and family activities. 2008 Summer Pillar of Service Project Water Drive to Save Lifes:    During July and August 2008 the City of Scottsdale Vista Del Camino Food Pantry was the recipient of the gifts of water, hats, t-shirts, snacks, backpacks and other toiletry gifts.  350+ cases and gallon jugs of water, 50 hats, 50 pairs of socks, 25 t-shirts and a good number of backpacks, snacks and toiletries were donated.  Vista del Camino is a City of Scottsdale Community Center that provides a variety of services to local residents to prevent homelessness, meet the basic needs of individuals and families in crisis, relieve   economic and emotional stress and assist individuals to maintain self-sufficiency.  Additionally, several parishioners choose to donate money ($265).  A check was sent to UMOM New Day Centers, a local family emergency shelter, for use in its food pantry.  UMOM's mission is to provide homeless and low-income families with food, shelter and tools to build a bridge to self-sufficiency.  Checkout www.umom.org.  The  parish's Ministry for Social Action is especially grateful to everyone who supported these two outstanding local non-profits that serve families in need.  Thank you for your support and thank you to the parish custodial staff for handling and storing your gifts.

The Caring Place Advisory Board Annual Retreat:  The Caring Place (CP) Advisory Board held its annual retreat for fun, conversation, prayer, silence, discussion and fine food on May 23, 2008 at St. Patrick’s parish.  The Caring Place is currently a partnership between The Community of the Blessed Sacrament, St. Patrick’s and St. Joan of Arc faith communities.  CP offers physical, social, emotional and spiritual support to all seniors, adults with special needs and their families.  CP provides opportunities for learning events and volunteer opportunities; information and referrals to community services; spiritual guidance; help in planning and coordinating care services and in-home personal and health care service.  Several parishioners from the partnering parishes have completed ViCAP volunteer training.  These volunteers were properly trained,  are scheduled and covered liability-wise under ViCAP programs.

This retreat was also a time to express appreciation to CP Community of the Blessed Sacrament active Advisory Board members:  Dr. Honora Norton (Founder); Jan Bower, Carol Czapinski, Lew & Pat Davis, Jack LaBonte, Pat Lichok, Lois Reabe, Pat Rekiere, Mary Sue Richards and Linda Santoro.  The group, also, expressed appreciation to St. Patrick board members—Sr. Barbara Higgins O.S.B., Walt Morris, Mike Self, Cathy and Bill Walsh and Larry Taylor, as well as,  Sam & Linda Vidulich of St. Joan of Arc parish. The Foundation for Senior Living supports CP through its referral and counseling services.

Stewardship - Pillar of Service:  Our parish’s JustFaith Ministry group recently completed a JustFaith “Journey to Justice” experience.  This group, along with Catholic Charities Office of Peace and Justice’s Parish Social Ministry Coordinator, met at Mesa’s Iglesia Christiana Hispana Pueblo de Dios with representatives of the Interfaith Worker Justice of Arizona (IWJAZ) and several workers concerned about their workplace situations.  IWJAZ supports Arizona’s working women and men through direct participation in worker campaigns at specific places of business to providing safe space in the form of an Interfaith Worker Rights Center, where any employee can come with concerns about their own workplace situation.  IWJAZ is supported by the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD).  CCHD is the domestic, anti-poverty, social justice program of the U.S. Catholic bishops.  Its mission is to address the root causes of poverty in America through promotion and support of community-controlled, self-help organizations and through transformative education.

The parish's JustFaith Ministry group is completing a 30 week JustFaith Ministries Program.  Throughout the JustFaith process there is a focus on the moral, spiritual and physical crisis we call povertyPoverty itself is a complex reality that is typically linked to many other issues, one of which is racism.  JustFaith Ministries works very closely with CCHD, Catholic Relief Service and Catholic Charities USA.  The JustFaith materials focus on poverty and highlight the themes of Catholic social teaching related to poverty.  Typical JustFaith sessions include opening and closing prayers, spiritual practices, reading, music, video/DVDs, guest speakers, retreats, and several off-site “journey to justice” experiences.  Call Dr. Honora at the parish ofice if you want more information.

Kilian McCaffrey on his ordination to the priesthood on June 2, 2007. Pictures are from his 1st Mass of Thanksgiving at Blessed Sacrament on June 3, 2007. Fr. McCaffrey was born in Dublin, Ireland. While living in Scottsdale, he joined our parish. His work at the parish led him to consider a call from God to enter the priesthood. He hopes that Catholics will remember to pray for the newly ordained priests as they embark on their "long journey."

Spotlight Ministry:  Our parish Welcome Committee - This Hospitality Ministry hosts quarterly community potluck dinners - the most recent was held February 9, 2007.  Over 90 people enjoyed great food and great music (thank you to members of our parish choir/musicians).  The potluck dinner is one of the many ways new parishioners are welcomed into the community.  This Ministry is a direct outreach to new parishioners and encourages all parishioners to welcome new people to our community.

Spotlight Ministry:  Senior Friendship celebrated its 22nd birthday on February 12, 2007.  This dynamic group meets regularly and gathers for other exciting activities and frivolity.  This group attempts to meet the unique social and spiritual needs of older parishioners.  You never know what this group, led by Linda Santoro (over the past 22 years!), might be up to!  Look for their meeting dates, i.e. to dine, to play bridge or outing info in the weekly parish bulletin.
